RBT PDU Requirements: The 3 Ways to Earn Your 12 Hours
RBTs on the 2-year recertification cycle need to earn 12 professional development units (PDUs) inside each cycle, and there are exactly three recognized ways to earn them: an organization’s in-service training on behavior-analytic service delivery, a professional development event through an Authorized Continuing Education (ACE) Provider, or university coursework in behavior analysis passed with a C or better. Each type has its own required documentation, and none of them can overlap with your ongoing supervision hours, which the BACB treats as a completely separate requirement.
Staying certified after initial RBT certification means meeting several ongoing requirements at once, and this is one of the newer pieces of the recertification competency assessment cycle, which only mentions the 12-hour number in passing. PDUs are their own tracked requirement, with their own rules about what counts, what documentation you need, and what doesn’t count no matter how educational it felt in the moment.

How many PDU hours do I actually need, and by when?
12 hours per 2-year recertification cycle, and they have to fall inside the specific cycle you’re applying them to. If your recertification date is September 30, 2028, PDUs earned before your prior cycle started (October 1, 2026) don’t count toward this one, even if you have plenty of hours banked from earlier. PDUs beyond the required 12 don’t roll over into the next cycle either, so there’s no benefit to stockpiling extra hours early (BACB RBT Handbook, “Professional Development” section).

Does my monthly supervision count toward my PDUs?
No, and the BACB is explicit that this can’t overlap. Ongoing supervision has to stay client-focused, and PDUs exist specifically to expand your general behavior-analytic knowledge beyond your current caseload. Even a supervision session that teaches you something genuinely new doesn’t count as a PDU, and a PDU activity, even one led by your own supervisor, doesn’t count as a supervision contact. They’re tracked and satisfied completely separately.
What content actually qualifies for a PDU?
Anything that expands on the RBT 2026 40-Hour Training Curriculum Outline, the RBT Ethics Code (2.0), other BACB requirements, or additional RBT-relevant topics the handbook names directly: working with supervisors, communicating with clients, and managing stress. That last category is broader than people expect; the BACB explicitly recognizes soft-skill and self-management content as legitimate PDU material, not just clinical procedure review.
Can I repeat the same training and count it twice?
No. Repeating an identical PD activity across cycles doesn’t provide new or expanded knowledge, so it doesn’t meet the requirement a second time. The BACB’s own example: attending the same annual presentation on caregiver interactions wouldn’t count again if you already counted it in a previous cycle. Two genuinely different presentations on related subjects, one on ABC data collection, another on functional analysis, can both count, since they’re distinct content even if the general topic area overlaps.
How do I actually document a PDU once I’ve earned it?
Enter it into your BACB portal account as soon as you have the supporting documentation in hand, using the specific form or transcript type that matches how you earned it. Enter the information exactly as it appears on your documentation, since mismatches between what you enter and what your paperwork shows are the kind of detail that causes review delays at recertification time, similar to how an ID mismatch causes delays at the Pearson VUE exam counter.
What if I miss the 12-hour requirement by my recertification date?
You can’t make up missed PDUs during a reinstatement period; the hours have to be earned inside the cycle itself, not backfilled after the fact once you’ve lapsed into inactive status. This is one more reason PDU tracking works better as an ongoing habit across the two-year cycle than as something addressed in the final weeks before a deadline, especially since your supervision requirements are running on their own separate monthly clock at the same time.
