RBT Renewal Competency Assessment: Deadlines and Fees
The RBT renewal competency assessment, officially the Recertification Competency Assessment, is a hands-on re-evaluation every certified RBT completes to keep their credential active. It has to happen no more than 45 days before your certification’s expiration date, overseen by a qualified BACB-certified RBT supervisor, using the current Recertification Competency Assessment Packet. Miss it, and your certification goes inactive, meaning you can’t bill, practice, or represent yourself as an RBT until you reinstate.
This is different from the assessment new applicants complete before their first RBT certification, and mixing the two up is the most common confusion around the term. The renewal version exists to confirm you’re still practicing the skills competently, not to test you as a beginner again. It’s paired with a recertification application, a fee, and, going forward, a professional development requirement that didn’t apply to the older annual cycle.

When exactly is my expiration date, and how often do I renew?
Typically the one-year anniversary of the date you passed your RBT exam, visible in your BACB portal account and on the public Certificant Registry. The cycle itself is shifting: RBTs recertifying on or after January 1, 2026, complete the current maintenance requirements one more time on the existing schedule, then move onto a 2-year recertification cycle going forward (BACB RBT Handbook). So your very next renewal may still be annual, with the 2-year cycle starting after that one.
What exactly does the assessment check?
The same six domains from the RBT Task List, tested through direct observation the same way the initial competency assessment was, just using the recertification-specific packet built for practicing RBTs rather than first-time applicants. Your supervisor watches you perform tasks like data collection, teaching procedures, and documentation in a live session, confirming you’re still competent, not memorizing a script for the observation.

What does recertification actually cost?
A $50 recertification application fee, effective in 2026, paid to the BACB. If you miss your expiration date and file during the 30-day reinstatement period instead, add a $50 late fee on top of that. There’s no separate BACB charge for the competency assessment itself, since it’s completed with your own supervisor as part of your ongoing working relationship. What’s new about the professional development requirement?
As RBTs move onto the 2-year recertification cycle, they’ll need to earn 12 hours of professional development units (PDUs) within each 2-year cycle, on top of the Recertification Competency Assessment. PDUs have to fall inside the specific cycle they’re applied to, don’t roll over if you earn extra, and can’t be made up retroactively during a reinstatement period. Ongoing supervision hours and PDUs are counted separately; a supervision session can’t double as professional development credit.
What happens if I miss my renewal deadline entirely?
Your certification becomes inactive, and you’re not permitted to practice, bill, or represent yourself as an RBT while inactive. You get a 30-day window from the expiration date to reinstate by submitting an approvable recertification application, your completed assessment, and paying both the recertification fee and the $50 late fee. Miss that 30-day window too, and the path back typically requires meeting the full current certification requirements again, not just a late renewal.
